Central European Nations Sign Agreement to Enhance Military Mobility

Lithuania and seven other European countries have signed an agreement to improve military mobility across the continent, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence announced on Thursday. Representatives from Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, and Slovakia were among the signatories.

The initiative establishes the Central Military Mobility Region of Northern Europe, with the aim of standardizing cross-border procedures, implementing a shared monitoring and coordination system, streamlining information exchange, and synchronizing infrastructure development in participating nations.

Strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank

“Efficient military mobility is a national priority for Lithuania,” said Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas. “We are achieving this by upgrading infrastructure and coordinating troop movements to ensure forces can move quickly, safely, and without interruption. Our main objective is to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank, in close cooperation with Poland and Latvia.”

Funding will come from a combination of national budgets and EU development funds, highlighting the strategic and collaborative nature of the project.

Expanding Military Corridors Across Europe

The agreement builds on the existing Netherlands–Germany–Poland corridor, extending it westward through Belgium and Luxembourg, and eastward through Lithuania, Czechia, and Slovakia. This creates a seamless Central Military Mobility Region, improving logistical readiness for NATO forces across Central Europe.

In Lithuania, key infrastructure projects are already underway, including:

• Upgrading the Via Baltica route to meet military requirements.

• Constructing the Loździeje–Olita–Vilnius road to increase capacity in the Suwałki corridor.

• Modernizing transport networks near training grounds in Podbrodzie and Rudniki.

Baltic Integration: Toward a Tri-Baltic Military Mobility Zone

Lithuania, together with Latvia and Estonia, plans to establish a Tri-Baltic Military Mobility Zone, further enhancing regional security and ensuring uninterrupted movement of allied forces.

Strategic Implications

This agreement strengthens NATO’s ability to respond rapidly to crises along its eastern flank while improving interoperability between member states. It also opens opportunities for Central European nations to invest in military infrastructure, optimize logistics, and participate in multinational exercises.

Experts note that this initiative is a significant step toward creating a resilient, integrated network for the movement of allied forces across Europe.
