Romania Set to Purchase 289 German Lynx IFVs

Romania is moving forward with one of its largest modernization steps in recent years as the government prepares to purchase 289 German-made Lynx infantry fighting vehicles. The decision follows the visit of Rheinmetall President Armin Papperger to Bucharest, where talks with senior officials accelerated the partnership between Romania and the German defense industry.

According to information confirmed by Euronews sources, the agreement does not stop at acquisition alone. A portion of the Lynx production process will be carried out inside Romania, strengthening the country’s defense industry and increasing its capacity to participate in European security projects.

During his visit, Papperger met with Ilie Bolojan at the Government headquarters, as well as with Minister of Economy Radu Miruță and Defense Minister Ionuț Moșteanu. The discussions resulted in a strategic understanding that positions Romania as both a major customer and an industrial partner in the Lynx program.

Bringing part of the production home marks a notable shift: instead of relying solely on imports, Romania is integrating itself deeper into the European defense supply chain. For Bucharest, it is not just about buying advanced vehicles — it is about developing long-term industrial capability and reinforcing its role as a stability pillar on NATO’s eastern flank.
